The new common agricultural policy will be key to securing the future of agriculture and forestry, as well as achieving the objectives of the European Green Deal.
On 25 June, 2021, negotiators of the European Parliament, the Council of the EU and the European Commission, agreed on the reform of the common agricultural policy (CAP). This provisional political agreement paves the way for the formal approval of the necessary legislation by the European Parliament and the Council in the autumn of 2021.
The new CAP, which starts in 2023, aims to foster a sustainable and competitive agricultural sector that can support the livelihoods of farmers and provide healthy and sustainable food for society, as well as vibrant rural areas.
Agriculture and rural areas are central to the European Green Deal, and the new CAP will be a key tool in reaching the ambitions of the Farm to Fork and biodiversity strategies.
The policy focuses on nine specific objectives, linked to common EU goals for social, environmental, and economic sustainability in agriculture and rural areas.
